Maya Ramishvili was born in Tbilisi. From 1984 to 1988, she studied at the I. Nikoladze School of Art and at the Faculty of Painting of the Tbilisi State Academy of Arts in 1990−96. The female theme prevails in Maya Ramishvili’s works. Beautiful, graceful and sophisticated heroines play a primary role in them. Her character continuously radiates femininity, captivating the viewer with the magic of her attractiveness and mystery. Maya Ramishvili fills her works with a kind of «patterning», using an original technique using lace and paint. Her backgrounds, in particular, resemble textile collages, in which every detail is carefully worked out. The most expressive parts of the characters’ bodies are surrounded by care and attention and endowed with special depth and volume in contrast to the intentionally flattened background. The beautiful but barely noticeable exaggerations of other focal elements also emphasize the expressiveness of the artist’s art. Apart from the unsurpassed craftsmanship underlying Ramishvili’s work, her work is captivating due to the universal appeal of its subject matter. It is impossible to remain indifferent to these enchanting images: a girl rummaging in her grandmother’s closet, a shy bride on her wedding night, or magical images of rain, flora, dancers, nights, bathers, etc. Maya Ramishvili’s works can be attributed to a new era in Georgian contemporary art, which has established itself as the Georgian avant-garde. Despite the fact that the features of the modernist wave are noticeable in her work, the classical foundations are also clearly visible: Maya Ramishvili’s art appears as a timeless synthesis of the old and the new.
